Farewell My Concubine

This morning, we visited the Temple of Heaven, where the emperors used to pray for a bountiful harvest. The weather was misty and rainy at times, but it actually gave the whole place quite a mystical feel.

We also visited Tien'an'men Square, which is the largest city square in the world. This gate is one of the many gates to the Forbidden City. This is one of the only pictures we have seen of Mao the entire time we've been here.

We entered the Forbidden City, where the emperors lived. It was built in the 1400s and was perfectly preserved and not open to the public until the last emperor was ousted in the early 1900s. It is truly one of the most amazing places we've ever seen. We had to take videos to capture it on film because it is so huge.

Tonight we will have dinner at a traditional Chinese restaurant where they will serve Peking Duck. Tomorrow we fly home, and we don't plan to sleep on the flight, so one big favor... please, no phone calls on Saturday morning! We'll call you when we wake up. We have no idea what the jet lag will do to us after 20+ hours of flying. We are really happy with our trip - not a single complaint, everything has been just perfect.

That said, there's no place like one's own home, and we are looking forward to getting back home. It is hard to believe we've had a 3-week vacation, the longest ever in our adult lives, and the furthest we've ever traveled. In fact, by the time we get home, we will literally have circled the globe, since we are coming home in the other direction. What a trip! Really, for us, it was the trip of a lifetime. We'll never forget it!
